Hibs January transfer wishlist as David Gray targets three positions

The mood around Easter Road as the January transfer window opens is one of positivity and optimism.

That certainly wasn’t the case for Hibs just a month or two ago when fans started to fear relegation to the Championship was a distinct possibility.

However, the club’s board stuck by a struggling manager in David Gray and it has proven to be a fantastic decision.

Gray has found solutions to problems and as a result, Hibs are on a brilliant run of form with five wins from their last six outings in the Premiership.

But that does not mean plans around the January window have changed – Hibs will still be looking to recruit in a number of positions.

And the need for more bodies has been given greater importance in the last few hours given Hibs have let three of their stars depart.

So what needs to be done at Hibs over the next few weeks? Not The Old Firm has a look.

Goalkeeper

Jordan Smith has usurped Josef Bursik as the main man between the sticks for Hibs in recent weeks, but the Hibees are still in the market for a new stopper.

Not The Old Firm exclusively revealed this in December and thus far, Hibs have been linked with a shock move for Hearts back-up goalie Zander Clark as well as Rotherham’s Cameron Dawson.

Gray has refused to comment on individual links but insists work behind the scenes is ongoing.

Attacking midfielder

Central to Hibs’ turnaround in form over the festive period has been a change of shape by David Gray.

They now play with a 3-4-1-2 formation with a number 10 behind two strikers. With that, Hibs will be keen to bolster their attacking midfield options.

Josh Campbell has been used in that role of late with Junior Hoilett also an option. But Hoilett is more of a wide man and Hibs are likely keen to recruit a more familiar number 10 to support, or potentially replace, Campbell.

They do have Rudi Molotnikov but he is just returning from an injury and is still only 18.

Striker

Injuries have hampered Hibs in the striking department recently with Mykola Kukharevych spending time on sidelines with a groin injury.

Dwight Gayle, however, is a dependable option while Hibs have been playing the rejuvenated pairing of Martin Boyle and Elie Youan as their furthest forward attackers.

But as Not The Old Firm also explained last month, Hibs are aiming to add a more conventional striker to their ranks to give Gray another option.
