Aberdeen January transfer wishlist: Kristers Tobers targeted for defence but more needed

During Aberdeen’s unbeaten march at the start of the season, few would have predicted their recent form.

The Dons were billed as title contenders as they swept all before them at the start of the season, even drawing away to Celtic and beating Rangers as they rammed home their credentials.

Or so we all though.

It has quite spectacularly fallen apart for Jimmy Thelin’s side.

They have now not won a game in eight attempts and have only scored two goals in their last five games.

That has allowed Rangers to take over in second while Dundee United are also closing in, three points behind after beating the Dons at the weekend.

Thelin has admitted Aberdeen need transfers in due to injuries but also just to improve their squad.

So here we take a look at what needs to be done at Pittodrie.

Aberdeen look to add in defence

Aberdeen will look to add to their central defensive ranks with Slobodan Rubezic and Gavin Molloy their first picks backed up by Angus MacDonald.

More cover is needed and Kristers Tobers is the man they want with an offer to Grashoppers already submitted.

No doubt the recruitment team will have further options in case that one falls apart, but the Dons will have to pay around £700,000 to get it done.

Midfield

Graeme Shinnie and Sivert Heltne Nilsen started the season well as a defensive midfield duo but both are in their 30s and have dropped off as the season progresses.

Dante Polvara and Ante Palaversa are other options, while Leighton Clarkson can play further forward, but with a number of players out of contract they will look to add.

Winger/forward

Pape Gueye started the season on fire as the whole team did, but has been out injured for months.

The goals have dried up with loanee Kevin Nisbet not meeting expectations after a bright start and Ester Sokler only netting twice in the league.

Out wide they have Duk, Topi Keskinen and Shayden Morris, and with Vicente Besuijen out for a while, mote options are needed.
