Aberdeen will likely be busy in the January transfer window with Jimmy Thelin looking to strengthen.

Thelin has already hinted at signings due to injuries to Jack Milne and Vicente Besuijen and the club now need cover for those positions.

We told you how Aberdeen recently promoted a new head of recruitment at Pittodrie who is a familiar face in long-serving talent-spotter Nuno De Almeida.

And Not the Old Firm can exclusively reveal one player who has already been the subject of a transfer bid from the Dons.

Versatile central defender Kristers Tobers is on the club’s shortlist and NTOF understands an offer has already been submitted to his club Grasshoppers of the Swiss Super League.

The 24-year-old can play either centre-half or as a defensive midfielder and he is the current captain of the Latvia national team.

Tobers has played 12 times this season so far for his club with one goal to his name and Aberdeen are very keen to add him to their squad as they continue their Scottish Premiership push this season.

The player also has 37 caps and one goal on the international stage. And he counts Lechia Gdansk and Liepāja among his former clubs.

Thelin’s Dons had an incredible run of 21 games without defeat and ran Celtic close before the Hoops would eventually find a way to make distance between the two sides.

Aberdeen have tabled an offer for centre-back Kristers Tobers

Rangers, meanwhile, have since had an upturn in form and have overtaken Dons in second spot but in the New Year there remains opportunity in the Granite City.

Tobers would be a strong addition to the club to compete with the current crop of stars but with Milne injured he would offer a fresh challenge at the back and add to the strength in depth.

Thelin has already insisted Aberdeen would make January moves as he revealed he always wants to “anticipate” what might happen.

And with former recruitment chief Chris Badlan seeking a fresh challenge elsewhere, a move for Tobers comes as one of new guru De Almeida’s first priorities in the window.

What Jimmy Thelin has said about Aberdeen’s transfer plans

Thelin said: “We try to anticipate things in and out of a squad.

“And you always try to be ready and prepare players to take over if someone is leaving.

“That is how we see the market.

“Sometimes you expect someone will not leave, but then it’s changed.

“However, I think we have a good control on the situation right now.

“And we are ready to keep going and try to build a strong squad.”
