Hearts are making early moves in the transfer market as they look to drastically improve their fortunes.

The Jambos sit 11th in the Premiership and manager Neil Critchley is under immense pressure after some recent woeful results.

On top of the fans, pundit Michael Stewart reckons Hearts should sack their boss.

What could boost the manager is if they manage to improve their side in the transfer market which then brings up some progress on the pitch.

The January transfer window slid open at midnight and the Jambos desperately need to do business.

Union Saint-Gilloise striker Elton Kabangu is high on Hearts’ list of priorities and that one could be completed as early as today, meaning he could make the squad to face Motherwell tomorrow.

They won’t be stopping there though as the Tynecastle men desperately need to bolster their defence too.

Hearts ‘target’ Jamie McCart

Hearts are short at centre-back due to long-term injuries to Frankie Kent, Stephen Kingsley. Craig Halkett is only just back to fitness himself while Kye Rowles is being linked with a move away.

Critchley believed to be looking to sign two central defenders in the window.

One now being named as a target is someone who knows the league well in former St Johnstone man Jamie McCart.

The 27-year-old is at Rotherham having left Saints for the English side after winning the historic cup double in Perth.

McCart has since played in the English Championship, League One and League Two, including loan spells with Leyton Orient and Barnsley.

He started this season as a regular back with Steve Evans’ side after being given a second chance but hasn’t forced his way back in after an injury.

The Scottish Sun is now reporting Hearts are weighing up whether to try and strike a January deal or to wait and see if they can get him on a pre-contract.

That is because Rotherham hold an option on his deal which currently expires in the summer if that option is not taken.

Another name mentioned in relation to Hearts and potential interest has been Kilmarnock winger Danny Armstrong.

He is another they have reportedly considered for a pre-contract with his deal coming to and end.

Killie boss Derek McInnes has admitted he is resigned to losing Armstrong and directly addressed the Hearts link.

He said: “I’d heard that a few weeks ago myself. Someone privately had told me that”, revealed McInnes.

“I speak to Danny’s agent regularly, and I speak to Danny regularly, so I think I would know if there had been contact.

“Certainly, if Hearts want to come through the door and let us know of their intentions to speak to Danny then fine, but they haven’t. I’m really relaxed with it. I’m fine with it.”
