The race for third spot in the Premiership is very much on with Aberdeen, Dundee United and Hibs all fighting it out.

St Mirren and Hearts may have outside shouts but those three are currently in the driving seat based on placings.

The Dons have sorted themselves out with two wins on the trot after going 14 without a victory and they have been trading places with the Tangerines in third.

Hibs have been on a sparkling rum themselves and are up to fifth, the win over Celtic at the weekend putting them to within four points of Aberdeen.

David Gray hailed two-goal hero Josh Campbell after that one, declaring he was doing the work of a man-and-a-half.

While Rocky Bushiri was also lauded for an “outstanding” moment full of heart.

Hearts have been going about their business quietly and Elton Kabangu’s double against St Johnstone has them keeping their momentum up, while the Buddies are a point above them in sixth.

It all means there will be an exciting race for third and the European spots between now and the end of the season.

Hutton and Stewart predict Aberdeen to finish third

The Pittodrie side were heavy favourites for the best of the rest, at least, after their start to the season. Then they were written off during their stutter.

But having stabilised, Alan Hutton and Michael Stewart are making them favourites again.

Hutton said on Premier Sports’ Scottish Football Social Club: “It’s a difficult one. I’m going to go for Aberdeen at this moment in time.

“I like what Dundee United have done. I think Jim Goodwin has done an excellent job. When they play to Dalby’s strengths, they can be very good. Deliveries into the box and he’ll go and attack it, he’s got really good numbers this year.

“But I just feel that Aberdeen have just got the edge.”

Asked if that is down to the business they did in the January window, he added: “Yeah, just in general. I think they have done well in the window. And now that weight has been lifted off their shoulders, it’s back-to-back wins, I just think they’ve got a little bit more when it comes to their team in general to push them through.”

Stewart agreed: “I would probably agree with Alan.”

Hutton backs Okkels to sign at Dons

One of those January signings was Jeppe Okkels on loan from Preston, with an option to buy.

Big things were expected but the Dan struggled to begin with before finding the net with a beautiful finish on Saturday, only to be ruled out for offside.

Hutton reckons that could be a sign of things to come, though.

He said: “Yeah, I think it was always going to take a little bit of time, it doesn’t happen overnight. You need to settle in and get to know your teammates.

“What I’ve seen so far, he needs to do more. But you see he’s a skillful player and has obviously got talent.

“That is hopefully a sign of things to come for him and Aberdeen. He’s shown he can be a technical player.”
