Scandinavian insight on Aberdeen and Hearts signings as one compared to Premiership rival

Aberdeen and Hearts both wasted no time in getting players in during this transfer window.

The Jambos were one of the first to do a deal on New Year’s Day when they completed the loan signing of Elton Kabangu from Union Saint-Gilloise in his homeland.

To add to that, they brought in Jamie McCart at centre-half, the former St Johnstone double-winner who had been with Rotherham.

The Dons have done even more deals than that- first bringing in winger Jeppe Okkels on an initial loan deal from Preston.

They then added central defender and Latvia captain Kristers Tobers from Latvia.

And they swooped for two further defenders yesterday, Danish right-back Alexander Jensen and Alfie Dorrington on loan from Tottenham.

Johan Mjallby on Aberdeen’s Jensen and Okkels

Former Celtic player and coach Johan Mjallby is from Sweden and so keeps a keen eye on Scandinavian football.

Both Okkels and Jensen both had spells in Swedish football and he has seen a lot of both.

On Okkels, he told the Premier Sports Scottish Football Social Club: “He’s a guy that needs a manager’s love, arm around his shoulders. He’s quick, he lives off his pace.

“I wouldn’t say he’s a natural goalscorer but he used to score quite a number of goals for Elfsborg when Jimmy Thelin was the manager.

“They probably need to give him a bit of time and show a bit of patience when it comes to him. But he’s one of them that if he starts scoring goals or being efficient, then he rides that wave and he plays better than he actually is as a player.

“But he’s one of those as well, if it doesn’t go for him he’s not going to carry the team, put it that way.”

On Jensen, he went on: “That’s actually an interesting one. I wouldn’t say he’s a sensational player or he wouldn’t be signing for Aberdeen, no disrespect.

“He plays with energy, he’s very efficient and steady. He likes to go forward with energy.

“He’s a bit like Alistair Johnston (at Celtic), not as good obviously.

“He’s going to fit in very good in that team. He’s steady but if he gets his marching orders to go forward he will.

“He’s good at most things without being ‘wow.'”

Mjallby on Hearts target Steinwender

Meanwhile, Hearts are being linked to Austrian defender Michael Steinwender from Swedish side Varnamo, and are believed to have agreed a fee.

It’s believed the deal could be concluded soon and so Mjallby has offered an insight on him too.

He said: “He was decent for Varnamo, which is a really, really small club, who have survived going down and getting relegated.

“He is six foot three, quite lanky, good in the air when it comes to corners and wide free-kicks. I am not too sure he’s got the character to marshall the fans he is quite mobile because he’s not the heaviest, like they are today.

“He’s six three but quite slim so he’s not a big boy when it comes to that.

“He’s decent on the ball, he can play his football, which is like the modern game. Is he a perfect fit for Hearts? Honestly, I don’t know. I really don’t know, it’s difficult to tell.

“It’s just about the character. If he’s got a strong character, he will go in there and show the real quality and be able to become a leader. If he’s not the right character, then he will just fall apart.”
