Aberdeen are hopeful of signing Grasshoppers Zurich defender Kristers Tobers next month.

We at Not the Old Firm exclusively told you how Jimmy Thelin wanted to bring Tobers to Aberdeen when the January transfer window opens in just over a week’s time.

The Latvian international side’s captain is on their radar and a bid has already been submitted for the versatile player.

Now NTOF can reveal the fee the Dons might expect to pay should an agreement be reached which is understood to be close to being struck.

It is understood the player could be available for around the £700k mark which would see Thelin land a promising prospect who already has 37 caps at the age of just 24.

Aberdeen have had an excellent season so far with 21 matches unbeaten being their record run.

They have dipped slightly in recent weeks as they want to secure third spot in the Scottish Premiership.

And the manager wants to add strength to his squad in the market.

New head of recruitment Nuno De Almeida replaced Chris Badlan in the role and will have his work cut out next month to bring in fresh faces.

But it is believed the swoop to bring in Tobers may be more straightforward than other potential incomings.

NTOF understands Dons are not too far away from Grasshoppers’ asking price on the star who can play defensive midfield as well as at centre-half.

Jimmy Thelin has promised January transfers for Dons

Tobers has played 12 times this season so far for his club with one goal to his name and counts Lechia Gdansk and Liepāja among his former clubs.

It comes after Thelin explained how he would have to dip into the transfer pool to bring in signings due to injuries at the club.

Jack Milne – also a defensive player who can play both at the back and in the midfield – picked up a knock and was ruled out for months alongside Vicente Besuijen.

It is likely another striker might also be chased in the coming window in the Granite City with Pape Gueye still ruled out.
