David Gray addresses Josef Bursik’s immediate Hibs future after demotion

Hibs are yet to make a signing this January but there are positions manager David Gray wants to fill before the deadline.

The Easter Road club sanctioned three outgoings early in the month, but fans are still waiting on the club’s first arrival.

Not The Old Firm understands a striker is high on the club’s wish list, while efforts to recruit a playmaker are also in the works.

In fact, it was reported on Friday that Hibs have made a £735k offer for midfielder Matias Siltanen, a highly-rated 17-year-old currently playing for KuPS.

It remains to be seen how successful Hibs will be in their pursuit of Siltanen given there is fierce competition from Swedish outfit Djurgårdens IF.

Elsewhere, we understand Hibs are also keen to sign a goalkeeper to provide much-needed competition for Jordan Smith and loanee Josef Bursik.

Gray on Bursik’s future at Hibs

Bursik has been rooted to the bench since November 26 when he was dropped for the 3-3 draw against Aberdeen. That came after a clanger made against Dundee as the Hibees lost 4-1 on a foggy evening at Dens Park.

He’s on loan from Club Brugge until the end of the season and there is no indication that the Belgians will recall him due to lack of game time.

David Gray has recently been quizzed on Bursik and whether he is looking to move him on to help facilitate the signing of a new goalkeeper this month.

But the Hibs boss has denied this and says Bursik just needs to keep training hard and take his opportunity if it arises again this season.

Gray said: “No, not necessarily. I think it’s probably just being proactive and see where that one goes.”

“Josef’s been superb as well. He’s reacted in a real positive way to being out of the team; he still trains as hard as he can every day.

“He understood the situation, he came out of the team and there’s nobody arguing because Smudge has done really well. That’s what happens when you’re in that department.

“They know that I’ve got trust in the goalkeepers when I play them. He just needs to keep training as hard as he can and wait for an opportunity.

“And if he gets his opportunity, he needs to then take it again because the competition’s clearly there.”

Hibs denied shock Zander Clark transfer

Hibs were linked with a shock move for Hearts goalkeeper Zander Clark, who has seen his game time severely limited this season.

Craig Gordon has played every minute under Hearts boss Neil Critchley and speculation began to arise over Clark’s Tynecastle future.

But the Clark to Hibs rumour was quashed in midweek when the former St Johnstone star signed a new two-year contract with the Jambos.

Hibs now have less than two weeks to find a goalkeeper who is able to put the pressure on both Smith and Bursik, who haven’t convinced fans this season.
